The Kukes Municipality, in cooperation with the Institution of
Archeology, have initiated a project that aims to bring back the values
of the Peca ancient town and its castle.

“There’s a demand from foreign tourists for cultural heritage. These are our roots, including Kukes and Kosovo. This castle has a very ancient history and we need to show this rich cultural heritage to everyone”, said the Mayor of Kukes, Bashkim Shehu.

Luan Perzhita, Director of the Acheology Institution and leader of this project, said that the Peca castle offers extraordinary values which reveal the origin of Kukes and its old name.

“The name of Kukes has started in this castle. There is an inscription dating 1600 years ago, which has the “Kukes” word on it. Life here has started even earlier. Early excavation showed that this area has been populated in the VI century b.c”, Perzhita says.
