Macedonian Parliament fires Prosecutor General

After 12 days of delays by the VMRO-DPMNE MPs, the Parliament of
Macedonia dismissed the Prosecutor General, Marko Zerlevski, considered
by the majority as non-professional and politically influenced by the
former government.

Zverlevski had refused to establish an investigation procedure for the accusations addressed to former officials, regarding the phone spying case two years ago.

MPs of the majority, according to the Voice of America, applauded when the Prosecutor  was fired. 64 voted in favor.

Gruevski’s party withdrew from the debate after the Commission for Stopping Corruption stated that the decision is not legal, since the date for the local elections has already been appointed. After this, no appointment or firing can be allowed. MP Ilija Dimovski from the VMRO threatened his colleagues of the majority that they would face legal consequences for violating this law.

However, Speaker Talat Xhaferri responded by explaining that the comments of this Commission do not bound the Parliament. The only institution that can overthrow a decision of the Parliament is the Constitutional Court. Zverlevski’s dismissal may make way for the judiciary reform.
