US Senate ratified Montenegro’s NATO accession

After overcoming a procedural obstacle that had blocked the voting
session, the US Senate voted in favor of Montenegro’s NATO accession,
hoping to oppose Russia’s attempts to increase its influence in Europe.
The initiative now awaits the signature of President Donald Trump, the final step for ratifying Montenegro’s accession, as regards the USA.
The ratification needed 2/3 of the votes. 97 senators out of 100 voted in favor. Two were against.
John McCain, senator, said that this is more than the accession of a nation with 650.000 residents. This is a challenge in the race against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Trump administration has supported Montenegro’s NATO accession, despite the critics addressed to the alliance in early November.
