Former CEC chairmen: “Elections cannot be postponed”

Two former Central Election Commission leaders, proposed by the right
wing, declared that the June 18th elections cannot be postponed. On the
contrary, it would be a violation of the Constitution.

Kristaq Kume, former CEC chairman, says that the elections can only be postponed with one week, and that has no sense.

Clirim Gjata, another former CEC Chairman, says that the request of the opposition for a technical government exists only so that they can postpone elections. The current government, which is not technical, has its mandate until June 18th, and they cannot postpone the elections without violating the Constitution.

The only possibility to postpone the elections, according to two legal experts, can be done only with 84 votes in Parliament, if all parties agree.

But can elections be held without the opposition?

Gjata said that elections can be held, but it will be difficult to realize them without the opposition, so that the standards can be achieved and the elections are not considered unilateral.
