Talat Xhaferi, former military of the Popular Yugoslav Army, then of the
Popular Macedonian Army, MP for five terms and former leader of the
National Liberation Army, is the only candidate for Speaker of the
Macedonian Parliament.
The procedure for appointing him was complicated by long debates created in Parliament by the VMRO, but also by the Albanian party, Besa Movement, who oppose his candidacy.
Xhaferi also used to be Defense Minister, a position for which he has been criticized by Macedonians.
He declared that he is aware about the situation that has been created, but he is also ready to face the complicated challenges.
Xhaferi sees this as a historic challenge, but also a good opportunity for Albanians in Macedonia. However, he is not worried about personal accusations.
“By law and Constitution, the Speaker’s competences are interweaved with institutions of other powers, including the Head of State. Based on its competences, the Speaker comes second on a state level. This is the political aspect of this role, and the tendencies to go on the personal aspect are wrong”, Xhaferi said.
Xhaferi’s appointment as Speaker would be historic for Albanians, but it is also a condition for resolving the current political crisis.
