Right-wing populism endangers Balkan’s transition

Political populism, especially from the right wing, is putting several
liberal Western European democracies in danger, even in Balkan
countries that are under transition.

The Economic Freedom Forum in Tirana brought a study made by the American Enterprise Institute, which focuses on the risk factors caused by this policy.

The study takes developments in Hungary as example, where citizens’ disagreement with some liberal policies was exploited by right-wing Prime Minister, Victor Orban, to create an authoritarian ruling.

“Populist parties have been taking more popular votes, dismantling this way the balance and control. The public sector is made of their militants, and they have made unprecedented attacks against the judiciary”, said Dalibor Rohac, AEI.

In Albania, discussion for such matters aims to raise awareness among citizens.

Selami Xhepa, from the Economic Freedom Forum, said populism is bigger when there are more economic problems.

European democracies are endangered by Russias interventions, which has taken advantage of several conflicts, such as that of Syria, to increase their influence in several countries.
