Right before the European Parliament plenary session for Albania’s
draft-resolution, the Romanian European MP, Monica Macovei, insists that
punishing political corruption is the only way for EU accession.
Macovei, Chief of the Joint Committee for Stabilization and Association with Albania declared that the accession negotiation will really start only after former officials or current officials are punished with prison.
“Albania must start the judiciary reform negotiations, because it is the most difficult challenge for your country. If Albania progresses on this direction, there will be no more obstacles for an official opening of the negotiations. I understand that it is very difficult to make justice. We have many laws similar to your Vetting Law, but its concrete implementation is what remains a true problem. You will build an office for the anti-corruption prosecution, but the most important thing is who is going to work there. Only capable people can bring a change”, Macovei declared.
