Improving pollution caused by waste materials and recycling are in the
focus of a study for Tirana’s environment protection. The results of the
studies in which were interviewed 1500 citizens was presented at the
German Embassy for the “German October” activity.

When asked for the most common pollution causes, 797 of the participators blamed the businesses, and the others blamed the residents.

The study has also included the problematic of plastic bags, and 899 of the participators declared that they used less than 5 plastic bags a day, 301 others less than 10 a day and the rest less than 20.

While the Western countries have started charging plastic bags more, in order to reduce their consume, this study shows that such an application would not be welcomed in Albania, since more than 406 of the interviewed consider this a bad initiative, 377 others good and 269 as not that good.

Despite the efforts for keeping a cleaner capital city, the study shows that when the citizens were asked if Tirana is clear, 905 answered that it is not clean, 288 say it is clean and 106 say “maybe not”.

Concerning remains the recycling situation. 708 of the interviewed do not know where recycles are made in Tirana, and the rest have partial knowledge. The German ambassador in Tirana, Carola Muller Holtkemper has listed some of the most problematic aspects that Albania is facing.

“As regards the environment problematic, and why is it so concerning for Albania, I would like to mention four of the main factors: First, the managing problematic and the treatment of urban wastes are known today and are very visible. Everyone knows that harmful substances could go from the earth surface to the drinking water, and that could damage our health. The second thing I wanted to mention is Albania’s tourist potential, which could not be exploited in maximum if the waste problem is present. Third, the usage of the substances that could be generated after these materials would be processed, which is an unexploited potential, or not very exploited up to now. The fourth point is the respecting of the EU environmental standards, which is a matter that in Albania can be solved very well, and not politically”, the Ambassador said.

The German ambassador spoke about a campaign organized in Berlin under the motto “We will fix it”, which will also be organized in Albania with the motto “I’m doing it do it for myself”.

The Ambassador Holtkemper refused to comment the law passed in the Albanian Parliament, but she added that Albania needs to build the necessary structures.
