University Ranking

The German company chosen by the Education Ministry to rank the Tirana Universities is working only on three subjects: economy, social sciences and law schools.

This way of ranking was rejected not only by the Tirana University, but also by 90% of faculties and universities that are left out of this process.

“The institutions included in the ranking scheme are those that teach only economy, law and social sciences. All institutions that do not include these three subjects, like Academy of Arts, Polytechnic University and other universities are not included in the ranking scheme. In this case, Tirana’s University ranking is excluded for 90% of the subjects that it offers”, says Ervin Demo, Rectorate’s chief of public relations.

Tirana Rectorate demands that all public and private universities should submit to the accreditation and publicly announce the number of their full time professors.

“The Higher Education law provides through a very clear legal criterion that for a University to exist, to offer service, to admit students in its premises, it must have at least 28 full time professors, divided in two faculties, and each faculty should be divided in two departments. At least three of the professors should have doctorate title. We think that for the implementation of this law, there is no need of accreditation, because it is a legal criterion, a direct obligation on the Education Ministry to implement this law in every institution of Higher Education that exists in Albania”, Ervin Demo adds.

Tirana University was the one that demanded university ranking in Albania, because of the thriving private universities, often without the necessary staff and criteria that is required by law.
