Tusk: “Balkan history, more dramatic than ‘Game of Thrones’

The President of the European Commission, Donald Tusk, warned that the situation in Western Balkan could escalate, as Brussels is giving a message of opening to candidate countries.

EU is using the six months presidency of Bulgaria to try and stop the influence of Russia, Turkey and other countries that aim to increase their presence in what has been called Europe’s troubled backyard.

Tusk compared the history of Balkan to the fantasy series Game of Thrones.

“The history of Balkan is longer and more interesting than the Game of Thrones plot, although there are no dragons. We want the present and the future to be less dramatic and with more stability, security and prosperity. This is what the people of the region deserve. The purpose of the EU is to help this scenario become reality”, Donald Tusk declared.

Sophia hopes to use its presidency to give a strong push to the efforts of Montenegro and Serbia, and to also help Albania and Macedonia with the accession negotiations.

Bulgaria will hold the first EU-Balkan summit in 15 years this May, but regional problems in Bosnia, Kosovo and Serbia are bringing more and more concerns as regards regional stability.

Russia, on the other hand, has escalated its efforts to increase influence and block the Euro-Atlantic integration, first with Montenegro’s NATO accession and then the pro-Moscow stance that was noted in Macedonia.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boiko Borizon, warned that the “Europeanization of Balkan is necessary to stop the Balkanization of Europe”.
