The Prosecution of Tirana started its investigations for the portal that spread fake news yesterday, alarming the population.
Syri.net, an Albanian news portal, published an article right after a tremor at 22:13, saying that a big earthquake was supposed to take place at 23:30, and everyone should get outside.
The fake news spread quickly on social networks and the streets of Tirana were immediately filled with families holding their children and trying to stay away from buildings.
Authorities intervened immediately and the news portal deleted the news article. They even tried to blame Top Channel, claiming they had copied it from a news article published by Top Channel, but publishing fake news.
Last night, police took the responsible journalist for questioning, while the anti-terror agency started an investigation. The case was taken today by the Prosecution of Tirana which is trying to verify the base on which the fake news was spread.
