On January 18th, 1991, the Ethem Bey Mosque was reopened in Tirana for the first time after 30 years, due to the communist ban on religion.

Xhavit and Iljaz Aliamheti, Ramazan Rusheku, Ibrahim Balla, Mehmet SInella, etc, were some of the Muslim devotees who opened the doors of the mosque.

The reopening was followed by a great ceremony that had the participation of thousands of Tirana devotees.

A video made on that day shows the great number of participants who filled the “Skanderbeg Square” as never before.

This day marked the return of faith among Albanian Muslim, following a fierce dictatorship that tried to uproot religion and belief from the people.

Before the opening of the Tirana Mosque, Catholic citizens of Shkodra, followed by the Muslim ones, had celebrated the opening of their old city mosque in a massive manifestation that marked the collapse of the atheistic communist regime.
