Tajani about refugee camps: “I imagine them in Albania and Northern Macedonia”

The President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, declared that the European Union needs refugee camps outside its borders. He says that he imagines such camps in Albania or Northern Macedonia.

The stability of Europe, according to the EU high representative, depends on Germany. The situation has now reached the point that the block’s stability is at risk.

Tajani warns that the way how the immigration matter is handled should not lead to the diffusion of the EU. If every state acts based on its own interests only, the Union could end up being dissolved. He reminded to the German parties, who are involved in a harsh debate about the asylum seekers, that migration is not an internal problem.

Greece and Italy are also under huge pressure. According to them, this makes them discuss even more the possibility of building refugee centers outside of the EU. But the signals coming from Brussels remain contradictory.

An article on BIRN says that the European Commission has denied of having concrete plans for building refugee centers in Albania. He said that the regions that will serve to this purpose have not been identified yet and that they are discussing the possibility of exploring the concept.

On the other hand, the Spokesperson for the government in Vienna, Peter Launsky Tieffenthal, confirmed for Deutsche Welle that there are talks for creating such centers in Albania.

One of the reasons why Albania is seen as a good place for this is because the Durres Port is considered to have the right capacity for large contingents of refugees.
