Spac labor camp turns into a museum

More than 60 prisons and labor camps were built around Albania during
the communist regime. The most notorious of all was the one in Spaç,
which held mainly political prisoners.

The marks of terror are still visible today at the sleeping areas, the food areas and the mines where the prisoners were forced to work.

The site has been abandoned for several years, and now the authorities are trying to turn it into a museum to preserve memories.

The Minister of Culture, Mirela Kumbaro, said that there is a complex project for the Spac prison, not to just rebuild it the same way it was before.

“We will have a very serious competition of international professionals for turning the prison into a museum”, Kumbaro said.
