Shëngjin Port, forgotten promise

Five years after many promises, it was the most convenient case for both
parties to decide if he Port of Shengjin would pass under the
management of Kosovo government.

The two-day visit of Kosovo Deputy Prime Minister Mimoza Kusari Lila, also Minister of Commerce and Industry, did not bring anything new regarding the project that never started and that remained only a promise.

Kosovo persistently demands the management of Albania’s northern port, as a potential opportunity for having sea access. This proposal came one year after the end of the war.

This ambition of the Kosovo government was made public during the visit of Prime Minister Agim Çeku in Tirana, on May 2006, when he agreed with Prime Minister Sali Berisha to give this port to the new state.

Since that time, the only concrete movement was a plan drawn by Kosovo Minister of Economy, Ahmet Shala, which was followed with the creation of a working group, but that was it.

But when the second man in charge at “Thaçi’s” government met Prime Minister Sali Berisha, Finance Minsiter Ridvan Bode and Economy Minister Naço, the Port of Shengjin was not even mentioned.

At least official releases of these institutions did not publish any comment regarding this project, as it had happened in the past.

The only part that was discussed by the diplomats was the liberalization of trade, travel and the inauguration of a Kosovo Customs Office at the Port of Durres.
