Russia interfered with Brexit referendum

Russia has not been meddling only with Balkan, and their fake news campaign to affect elections in USA was not the first case to interfere with Western democracies.

The British newspaper “The Times” says that Russian Twitter accounts were hyperactive on the verge of the Brexit referendum, appealing citizens to break from the EU.

The announcement comes one day after the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, publicly criticized Russia of causing disagreements in the West through fake news and divisive campaigns on social media.

“We know what you are doing, but you will not succeed”, May said in a message addressed to Vladimir Putin.

The Times quotes a joint study of the Berkley University in California and the Swansea University in Wales, which discovered 150.000 fake Twitter accounts based in Russia, which had been working in the past to create support for Russia’s rebels in Ukraine and for the annexation of Crimea.

Their activity peaked on June 23rd, the Election Day, when 45.000 messages were posted within 48 hours. They went down to zero after the referendum.
