The Council of Justice Appointments will remain with eight members as they review the 37 candidates brought by the President, running for the two vacancies a Constitutional Court Judges.

In the first meeting of the Council of Justice Appointments, member Rovena Gashi announced that she couldn’t be part of the process due to conflict of interest.

Gashi’s declaration behind closed doors comes at a time when she runs for both vacancies, including the one created by the resignation of Constitutional Court Besnik Imeraj.

Her withdrawal will be valid only for the evaluation process of the candidates, with her being one of them.

Prosecutor Rovena Gashi is not a new name for the political scene. There were many debates about her, when she was proposed as the only candidate for the Prosecution for the Council of Justice Appointments, by the signature of the former Prosecutor general, Adriatik Llalla.

Her name was brought twice by the Prosecution. The one-candidate letter was criticized by the US Ambassador, Donald Lu, but then Gashi was elected member of the Council of Justice Appointments.

Gashi led the Decriminalization Sector at the Prosecution General. After Llalla’s term expired and Arta Marku was appointed Prosecutor General, Rovena Gashi was immediately dismissed from her Foreign Relations post.

The Prosecution filed a complaint at the Court against this order, but the Administrative Court ruled against them. Prosecutor Rovena Gashi now awaits her pointed assessment from her colleagues at the Council of Justice Appointments. The list of candidate names will be taken back to the President, who will pick the two new members of the Constitutional Court.
