The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, defended the government’s action to remove people from social welfare.

From Berat, where the government held today’s meeting, Rama said that most of those who were removed are able to work, but they refuse to work.

“70% of them are aged 24 to 45, able to work. I cannot accept that factories risk bankruptcy because no one goes to work for them, and on the other hand there are people able to work who want social welfare in a time when they are offered a job. I am talking about concrete factories who want to hire people, but people refuse to work”, Rama declared.

Rama said that it is true that some of the families left out of the welfare system could really be in great need.

“We are in a process of verification and assessment. If there are families in need we will find ways to get them involved”, Rama said.

According to the Prime Minister, the economic welfare system is being used politically by the opposition.

“You will see manipulation stories on a daily basis”, Rama said.
