The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, attended the “Friends of Albania” meeting in Brussels, where he asked the EU to open the accession negotiations for Albania.

Rama underlined that Albania is not looking for any undeserved gift, but wants to open the negotiations that the country deserves.

However, Rama admits that Albania is not ready for accession. Mentioning the problems of corruption, organized crime and drug traffic, Rama underlined that Albania is working for fulfilling the criteria with the key priorities.
“We know that we are not ready for accession. We still have problems with corruption, organized crime and the drug traffic. But we are working in this direction. Albania is not looking for a gift or any kind of undeserved favour.

We only want to open the negotiations which we deserve. Opening the accession negotiations with Albania doesn’t mean creating a new potential problem. It means opening a process that will make Europe stronger, since Balkan desperately needs Europe, and Europe needs Balkan strategically”, Rama said during the “Friends of Albania” meeting in Brussels.

Rama had a message for the EU countries, adding that the ghosts of the future would not damage the future of the country and of the region.

“Since 2014 we have cooperated to bring the region to a new level of cooperation. This is a region that has seen conflicts, wars, with different religions and ethnicities. We must never forget that what we achieved is a great accomplishment that should be reinforced so that the future doesn’t bring us back the ghosts of our past”, Rama said.
