Power plants sale, Bello: Cost for citizens

Former Minister of Energy, Pajtim Bello, is against the sale of
hydropower plants to private companies, considering it as a completely
wrong step that could have additional costs to the economy and citizens.
Mr. Bello says that the government has no objective reason for
privatizing the production of energy.

“The political factor does not present any reason for privatizing this sector”, Bello says.

According to him, the moment that the government has chosen for selling hydropower plants is the most inappropriate.

“When you have an inappropriate economic climate, you cannot privatize strategic sectors. We have an economic crisis in the entire region, in Europe and also within our borders”, Bello declared.

Keeping this production in the hands of the government has been the main mechanism that has protected citizens from unstoppable energy price increase.

“The government must try and soften energy price for many years”, Bello emphasized.

The Albanian government initially privatized the energy distribution system, a privatization that at least until now, according to experts, is far from being successful.
