Population registration begins

This Friday morning, a civil registrant knocked on Eshref Ajeti’s door, in Prishtina. He must give information about his family members, and this data will be kept in confidence.

Except of the family members that are present in Kosovo, Mr. Ajeti can give information about the family members that live abroad.

On the first day of population registration, a process that in Kosovo is being held for the first time after 30 years, the citizens think that it is more convenient that the registrant comes to their homes, than standing in long queues.

“We have some family members abroad, and I think that this is the case with most of Kosovo’s families. And I will register them”, Eshrefi says.

On the occasions when there is nobody home, the registrant leaves an envelope that informs the family that the registration has started and next time it would be preferable to find them home.

“Nothing has gone wrong. Everything has been good so far. Most of the people have welcomed us and are happy for this population registration. I hope that we have real success until April 15th”, says Blerina Berisha, registrars’ supervisor.

“Thousands of registrars spread in the streets of Kosovo to take data about the houses, the residents living in them and family economies.

While in the Skënderaj commune, the registration symbolically started with the house of the KLA legendary commander, Adem Jashari.

This was the first of the door to door population registry, which is expected to finish after 15 days all over Kosovo, and in Northern Kosovo a little longer.
