The President of Albania, Ilir Meta, declared that the reason Albania doesn’t have a Constitutional Court is due to the fact that the Council of Judiciary Appointing, which makes the necessary evaluation of candidates, has not been established yet.

“The list of candidates has not been opposed by any judge or prosecutor. The lists were sent by the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor General and the High Council for the Judiciary. The results of the lot that was organized for the Commission of Judiciary Appointing”, Meta said.

“The Albanian Prime Minister, four days after the lot, said that he wasn’t happy with the names. On January 31st, 2017, Rama threatened the members that he would fire them through the vetting process. The Prime Minister openly showed that he had the power to block the council and to fire more than half of them”, the President declared.

“To help this project, Rama used the US ambassador of that time by misinforming him. The stance held by the ambassador was very wrong, because, as he admitted days later, he had been misinformed by the SP representatives. The claims of the ambassador were verified and it turned out that the Prosecution General had implemented the provisions of the Constitution, article 221 of law 115/2016. After getting updated with the results of the verification, the ambassador apologized to the Speaker by clarifying that he had been misinformed by the Socialist Party representatives. How could we gather the Council of Justice Appointing after the public declarations of PM Rama and the US Ambassador?”, Meta declared.
