The Albanian Minister of State for the Diaspora, Pandeli Majko, is the first high-level official who visited the Albanian supplementary school in Kilburn, London.

This school has been founded by Albanian associations and offers Albanian language courses on Saturdays.

Majko reiterated the importance of speaking Albanian in the family. According to him, mothers have a major role in transmitting the language to their children and avoiding assimilation of younger generations.

The Minister informed teachers, parents and representatives of the Ardhmeria Association about the joint plan between Albania and Kosovo as regards Albanian language teaching in the Diaspora.

The Minister said that the agreements reached between both governments will help give Albanians an easier approach to Albanian books and education.

In the meeting with representatives of the Albanian community in London, including students, Minister Majko said that the Diaspora is not a political matter, but it requires political consensus so that the Diaspora can progress with the same pace as Albania, as regards teaching.

Considering the Diaspora matter a real challenge, Majko said that they had undertaken important steps for creating the structures that will enable Albanians abroad to reinforce their relations with the country of origin.

“We want to create a stable and long-term relationship with the Diaspora, a relation that will not be reduced with the changing of governments. We are trying to institutionalize it so that it doesn’t remain just a dialogue from distance. The Albanian government must be in line with its Diaspora”, the Minister declared.

Majko praised the Albanians in Great Britain for their achievements and underlined the need for a better organization in various levels. The Minister said that more efforts are needed for preserving the Albanian language and identity.
