Special EU envoy for Albania, Miroslav Lajcak, urged the Albanian politicians to take their responsibilities.

During a press conference held after several meetings with Albanian political leaders, Lajcak described the May 8-th local elections as “very important”.
“My visit shows the EU interest on Albania. Local elections are very important for the country. Political leaders should take their responsibilities.” Lajcak declared.

The European special envoy emphasized that Albania needs concrete reforms to make its way to the EU, estimating the conditions set by the European Commission.
“Our preconditions are: dialogue between ruling parties, respecting of the institutions and a clean regain of institutional trust.” Lajcak said.

On this regard, he appealed full and independent investigations of January 21 turmoil by the respective justice institutions.

“We urge full and independent investigation of January 21 turmoil. The parliamentary commission assembled for this matter, should investigate and pass the results to the General Prosecutor.” Lajcak underlined.
He emphasized that EU expects serious efforts from Albania in implementing the reforms and conditions recommended in the European Commission report.

“We expect electoral reforms in accordance with OSCE/ODHIR recommendations, and better cooperation between government and opposition against crime, corruption and protecting the minority rights.” Lajcak added.
