Kukan: Latest events endanger Albania’s future

The head of the European Parliament Delegation, Edward Kukan, expressed
his disappointment for the situation creation in Albania since Elections
of 2009.(UPDATE)

Asked by Top-Channel to give a comment on current events, the Slovenian Kukan answered that the situation is very regrettable, because Albanians deserve more.

“I have been in Albania for observing elections two years ago. We were pleased with the process. It wasn’t as dramatic as we were told. But the voting process was only one part of this process”, Kukan declared.

“The other process is the vote-counting process and accepting the results. The current situation, unfortunately, is very unpleasant. Starting with the Elections of 2009, the country is facing a political crisis and this is the reason why Albania did not receive the candidate status when Monte Negro took it. I can express only regret for such a situation. Because Albania deserves more than this, better than this”, Kukan added.

He added that the protests and clashes of the protesters with the police are ugly images and the politicians of both parties must sit down and find a compromise.

“Baroness Ashton released a declaration appealing the politicians of both parties to be reasonable. We, as European Parliament, can make appeals, can encourage you, we can either implore you to find a solution. But at the end, your politicians are the ones who must find the compromise. I speak with passion because I have been very involved in Albanian political developments, I have followed them closely. I am very sorry, because these elections were the unique and best occasion for Albania to show that the Albanian politicians are mature. When you see police clashing with the protesters, all I can say is that I feel sorry. You can quote me that I feel very disappointed”, Kukan declared.

The European Parliament Delegations is staying in Prishtina for two days, attending meetings with Kosovo leaders.

EU Parliament Members asked Kosovo officials to fulfill the conditions for visa liberalizations, also expressing their support for the European Kosovo.
