While France, Netherlands and Denmark expressed their reserves on the EU enlargement process, the European Commission president, Jean Claude Juncker, appealed for unity regarding Western Balkans.

This was the final speech for this year, before the next EU elections. He underlined that the European efforts have reconciled history with geography through the enlargement process. But he appealed to European countries to find unity about Western Balkans, once and for all.

“Should we not find unity over Balkan, our immediate neighbourhood will be shaped by others”, Juncker said, implying the danger of other powers meddling in Western Balkans.
