On January 21st 2011, four people were killed in front of the Prime Minister’s Office, during a protest organized by then opposition leader, Edi Rama.

On January 21st, 2018, Prime Minister Edi Rama received relatives of the victims inside the Prime Minister’s Office, promising that justice will be done through the implementation of the Judiciary Reform.

Ana Veizi, daughter of Ziver Veizi, one of the four victims, now about to graduate high-school and with the desire to become a judge in the future, trusts that the Judiciary Reform will bring justice.

“No justice has been done yet, but with the passing of the judiciary reform, I have one more hope that we will reach our goal. Compensations and justice are different things”, she said.

The government approved 970,000 EUR for the families of the four victims, the second compensation after the one of January 18th 2017, which took the total compensation to 2.1 million EUR.

The government said that the compensation order comes from a verdict of the Court of Tirana, which ruled that the four deaths were caused by the negligence of former National Guard Commander in Chief, Andrea Prendi, who was sentenced to 1 year in prison, and National Guard officer Agim Llupo, who was sentenced to 3 years. The opposition blamed then Prime Minister Sali Berisha for the killings and promised justice.

The Socialists approved to compensate every family with 525,000 EUR, but Aleks Nika’s uncle expects a new trial since the bullet that took the life of his nephew has not been verified from which gun it had been shot from.

“There is evidence that the bullet came from Andrea Prendi’s gun. If the gun was used by someone else, then it will be seen by the investigation”, Mark Nika said.

The lawyer of the families, Dorian Matilda, confirmed for Top Channel that there has been no positive progress with the case that was admitted by the European Court of Human Rights in Strasburg.
