All local actors of the judicial system and international representatives that assist in Albania attended a meeting about the idea of removing the immunity of judges and deputies.

Although the meeting organized by the European Union and European Council was held behind closed doors, the vice chairman of High Council of Justice, Kreshnik Spahiu, reconfirmed his stance for removing judges’ immunity from the first degree to the High Court.

“What is happening is that immunity has been transformed into a barrier that has stimulated corruption in politics and the judicial system. Immunity has been transformed into a taboo and a barrier that has established imparity between citizens”, Spahiu emphasized.

Despite the declarations in favor of judge immunity removal, the implementation of this practice is difficult, because these amendments require 84 votes on the Parliament.
