Former Russian Intelligence Security Director appointed as Ambassador to Tirana

Mihail Yurevich Afanasyev will be the new Russian Ambassador to Tirana. He handed over his credential letters to President Ilir Meta on November 16th.

The Russian embassy has posted a notification about his arrival, but without giving many details about his diplomatic career.

“The new ambassador of the Russian Federation in Albania, Mr.Mihail Afanasiev, was born in 1954. He started his diplomatic career in 1980. He has worked at the BRSS Central Committee of the Foreign Affairs and of the Russian Federation, and also on diplomatic representation duties abroad. From 2005 to 2010 he served as Russia’s Ambassador to Ethiopia. Before being appointed to Albania, he has led one of the Foreign Ministry departments. He is married, father to one daughter”, the biography says.

Top Channel has obtained additional information about the career of the Russian ambassador. Before arriving to Tirana, Mihail Yurevich Afanasyev has led the Department for Supportive Information at the Russian Foreign Ministry. Although not much is known about the activity covered by this department, one of the main objectives was securing intelligence.

Afanasyev has led several reforms for improving intelligence security and technology at the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Being a speaker of both English and French, Mihail Yurevich Afanasyev has served as Russia’s adviser at the French Embassy in Paris, from 1995 to 1999. From 1993 to 1994 he has led the Department for Africa and the Middle East at the Foreign Ministry.
