The former Marine Commander who led the negotiations with Italy for the marine border, told this Thursday on Top Channel how Albania withdrew from 15 miles of territory in 1990.

Vladimir Beja, last night’s guest on “The Unexposed”, said that Albania had 15 miles of territory, against the international laws, when ti was a member of the Warsaw Treaty.

But by the end of the ‘80s, Albania received an ultimatum.

“In 1975, Albania extended its borders with 15 miles, going against any other country. The act was a paradox. The law was brought back in parliament, but Albania kept using 15 miles until 1989, when there was an ultimatum from the USA, through the French Embassy. It said that Albania had to withdraw to 12 miles. In 1990, the government withdrew”, he said.

Beja remembers that in the negotiations with Italy, they discussed the status of the Sazan island. The Italian delegation claimed it was uninhabited. This was a difficult part of the negotiations. If we had accepted the proposal of Italy, we would have lost 100 miles”, he declared.

Professor Doctor Eqerem Yzeriri, Geography Professor at the Faculty of History and Philology, declared that in the negotiations with Greece, Albania’s delegation should be cautious with the terms: “The only principle that should be implemented is that of equidistance, which leaves a lot of room for interpretation”, he declared.
