Elections, ambassadors intervene

The Albanian vote counting process is continuing within the limits of a
democratic process even in this tense situation, but the international presence seems to have a special merit for
this.

Thursday started off filled with tensions in four Municipality Units where the vote counting process was still underway.

Although it should have started early in the morning, the commissioners started to count the votes at 11:30, exactly one hour before the US ambassador visited the Prime Minister Berisha and the Socialist leader Edi Rama.

Mr. Arvizu visited the Head of the Government at the Prime Minister’s office, accompanied by the election observers sent from USA, attending a meeting with Prime Minister Sali Berisha.

The official announcement informs that the American ambassador declared that this mission with 60 observers was a direct contribute of the US government for the transparency of this election process.

Mr. Arvizu added that this mission is evidence of the good relations between USA and Albania, but also shows the commitment of US towards the values that both countries share.

On his behalf, the Prime Minister Sali Berisha underlined that the elecetion process is following a solid, consensual and internationally certified legal basis, and that the usage of technology in the vote counting process is guaranteeing maximal precision.

The Prime Minister emphasized that every vote will be counted with greatest precision and that the real winners of these elections are the Albanian citizens.

A few moments after this meeting, the US ambassador, Alexander Arvizu, visited the headquarters of the Socialist Party.

The US diplomat released no comment after coming out the Socialist headquarter, where he met the opposition leader, Edi Rama. However, sources say that the US ambassador addressed clear messages to both leaders regarding the actual situation of the election process.

One day ago, the Spokesperson for the European Commissioner for Enlargement congratulated the Albanian citizens for the calm and massive participation in these elections.

When asked about the delays in the vote counting process, Mrs. Butler said that for the answer of this question the Prime Minsiter Berisha was to be asked.

On the other hand, in every moment of tension in Tirana there has been a great presence of the OSCE / ODIHR observers and of diplomats accredited in Tirana.
