The Spokesperson for the European Commission, Natasha Butler, declared
that the European Union followed with great attention the May 8th Local
Elections in Albania.

According to Butler, the European Union considers that the Albanian citizens had an unusual and great participation, and that the administrative structure of these elections guaranteed a calm process on the Elections Day.

“We value the high participation of the citizens in such a democratic process. These elections were followed by a tense climate and high polarization. The final report will focus mostly on the parties’ behavior during the whole process, including vote counting and the way in which possible complaints will be treated”, declared the Spokesperson for the European Commission.

Butler said that the fulfillment of European and international standards is Albania’s main priority for the next steps towards EU integration.
