Dumped in rivers and landfills, abuses with hospital waste

Top Channel has obtained evidence of what hospitals throw in rivers, landfills and agricultural lands.

This is the scheme of disposing of the dangerous hospital remains.

The Albanian law foresees that hospital remains are collected by companies that are contracted for their management.

There are six companies in Albania that must manage, differentiate the waste and then eliminate them in incinerators.

This technology leaves behind only solid, safe remains that must be deposited in landfills, following a regular legal procedure.

However, there is serious doubt that most of the hospital waste goes to landfills.

Top Channel has surveyed for several days the landfills. There are plenty of syringes in Fier, dumped in an area where animals search for food.

The Vlora city has an autoclave which is supposed to treat hospital waste, but footage from the landfill show that there is hospital waste with recent production dates.

The same situation is in Durres and Korca.

The waste that ends up in nature should have been eliminated because the state budget gives money each year and no one knows where it goes.

The Albanian citizens lose twice in this case: once for the money they pay, and then with their health being put in danger.

This situation that has been going on for years has only one explanation: corruption with waste, which starts from the hospital door to their distribution. The lack of control starts there and continues to the landfills.

Top Channel will keep following the hospital waste scandal, bringing new evidence which proves this criminal act on the health of Albanian citizens.
