The Greek newspaper “To Proto Thema” criticizes the Greek government and
more specifically the Ministry of Education, noting that Greek schools
in Korce and Himara might close due to economic crisis.

According to this newspaper, the school “Omiros” (Homer) which has successfully functioned for more than one decade in the city of Korca, and which teaches not only Greek minority students, but also children from families who want a greater education quality, today is in difficult economic conditions, because the Greek Ministry of Education has not fulfilled its financial obligations, failing to pay even the personnel.

The newspaper refers to voices from Korça, who say that if the Greek government will not fulfill its financial obligations, the Albanian authorities will stop it from functioning.

The article also says that the Islamic school that was opened two years ago in this city, financed by the Turkish government, is ready to take all students of the Greek school if it will be closed.

Greek Minority organizations and deputies from Northern Greece appealed the Greek Education Minister, Anna Diamantopulu, to take urgent measures by finding he necessary funds and to avoid the destruction of a great amount of work that has been done for years in this city.

Similar problems are facing the Greek schools in Himara, where teachers have not been paid since the beginning of this year, and many people are also talking about closing it.

Many of the teachers are looking for jobs in other schools in Albania and Greece.
