Big business sales in Albania declined with 38.5% in the
period of January – March of this year, compared to the same period of
2010, according to the Albanian Institution of Statistics.

The volume index of business indicators was created by ISTAT, based on the data gathered from big enterprises, through a selective monitoring.

It reflects the sales performance of producing sectors of goods and services, or wholesale sales.

Construction, transportation services and telecommunication have declined, while the only one with growing tendencies is the extracting and processing industry, thanks to an increase of oil and mineral production.

“In the construction sector, the volume of the business indicators shows a decline of 26.4% compared to the previous trimester, while for the first trimester 2010, this activity shows an increase of 9.0%”, says INSTAT.

“In the service sector, where are included economic activities in commerce, hotels, transportation, informative and architectural services, the first trimester of 2011 has a decline of 18.5% compared to the previous trimester, but compared to the same period of one year ago it has an increase of 3.4%. The commerce index has a decline of 18.5% compared to the previous trimester, while compared to the first trimester of 2010 there is an increase of 3.9%”, INSTAT adds.

The decline of registered sales in the sector of hotel services, transportation and tourism seems to contradict the declarations of the Minister of Culture and Tourism for “a considerable increase of foreign tourists”.

“Compared to the same period of one year ago, extracting and processing industries have a growth of 50.4% and a decline of 28.3% and 14.3% in electrical power and water sector”, INSTAT declares.
