After the recent visits of EU special envoy Miroslav Lajcak and commissioner of EU enlargement, Stefan Fule, US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Thomas Countryman, visited Tirana earlier this day.

Mr. Countryman met Prime Minister Berisha at 13:15 and Socialist Party leader Edi Rama.

Prime Minister Berisha updated Mr. Countryman on Albanian parties’ dialogue table called by the Democratic Party to treat the OSBE ODIHR recommendations. These recommendations are specifically addressed to the main Albanian parties that have the political and legal obligations of a fair election process. Prime Minister Berisha underlined that the agreement offered by the majority, which includes many transparency requests and guaranties required by the opposition and Socialist party, fulfills in details the OSBE ODIHR recommendations and would be an additive guaranty for the local election process.

Mr. Countryman valued the positive steps taken during the two recent months and emphasized that the dialogue, the cooperation with EU Commission on integration, and the majority’s efforts to achieve an agreement for the implementation of the ODIHR recommendations, are very positive events.

The US diplomat valued the election process and voters’ list preparations managed by the Election Central Commission and other institutions. He also noted the significance of an election process within standards and the role of political parties in the post-election period.

He was later attended by the Albanian President, Mr. Bamir Topi. During the meeting with the Albanian head of state, the US diplomat emphasized the necessity of a political and institutional dialogue, the consolidation of a functional democracy, the respectability of independent constitutional institutions and the importance of media independence and professionalism.

Mr. Countryman showed once again to Mr. Topi the constant US support on his work and efforts as a symbol of unity, in the service of Albania and a functional democracy.

The Albanian head of state expressed once again his personal and institutional readiness to undertake within the laws and major national interests whatever action that guarantees fair and democratic elections and that also encourages the Election Central Commission and all electoral structures.

Mr. Countryman will hold a press conference from the US embassy later this evening, when he is expected to speak on this visit’s results, regarding May 8th local elections.
