British ambassador: Supporting independent institutions

Great Britain is following with great interest the latest post-election
developments in Albania, openly supporting and encouraging independent
institutions like the Electoral College and the General Prosecution.

“We will continue monitoring the election process and the political situation with great concern”, says the UK ambassador in Tirana through a press release, noting that for London and the international community, what really matters is a credible process that has Albanian’s trust.

“It would be a big disappointment if the ballot counting and appeal issues would cast shadows over the good part of the electoral process”, the declaration underlines.

The ambassador Fiona McIlwham considers Electoral College’s role and that of the General Prosecution as very important:
“I hope that they will have the necessary space for reviewing these cases without political interferences and without pressure. The Baroness Ashton and many others said very clearly that the appeal procedures must be just, transparent, independent and in full accordance with the existing legal frame. International Community is ready to offer additional support if needed. The appeal process must be accepted by all parts, in order to draw a line with these elections, to take the necessary lessons, to approve them and implement reforms”.

The declaration of the British Ambassador concluded: “The British government wants to see Albania throwing decisive steps towards EU membership. Albania will reach this only with professional and strong institutions, that act independently and with integrity”.
