The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, held a speech from the podium
of the UN General Assembly, listing our country’s progresses in the
recent years.

The head of the Albanian government underlined that Albania is now among the countries with medium and high economic level, and one of the few countries that was not affected by the economic crisis.

“Albania used to be among world’s poorest countries, but today belongs to the countries with medium and high economic level. More than 34% of the budget revenues derive from the private sector. It is a country where democracy and freedom of speech prevail. It is the country of religious tolerance. It used to be the most isolated country in the world, but today is an Atlantic Alliance member. The number of tourists today has reached 3.5 million, more than the last year. The Albanian economy is among the few countries that were not affected by the global crisis. The economic freedom has increased. We have facilitated business opportunities through the One Stop Shop system. Our economy will continue to grow and we will fulfill our dream for a developed Albania. Albania looks like a small Norway in the Balkan Peninsula. The hydropower plant projects in Albania resulted very successful. We are ready to battle against the global environment changes, and this is a very important point for us”, Berisha declared.

The appeal for Kosovo’s recognition

The Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, appealed the UN countries that have not recognized Kosovo’s independence yet, to undertake this act on behalf of the regional stability.

He appealed Serbia to give up from their purpose for changing the northern borders and to remove the roadblocks in their borders with the newest Balkan state.

“I appeal other UN members that have not recognized Kosovo’s independence yet, to undertake this step for the regional peace and stability. I ask Serbia to accept the verdict of the International Court that declared Kosovo’s independence as legal. The Republic of Kosovo, with the help of EULEX and KFOR has implemented the highest standards and their efforts are the most successful, since the time of the independence declaration, by offering a better life quality to the citizens of Kosovo and other minorities in the country. The past should never return”, Berisha declared, addressing his speech to Serbia.

“The parallel structures in Northern Kosovo have caused the criminality and smuggle to grow. I appeal Serbia to remove their roadblocks in the border with Kosovo, to respect the agreement that was signed this month and to secure free import and export for both countries. Border control is an essential condition in Balkan countries. There where are parallel structures, it means that Serbia still believes in the division of Kosovo. I invite Serbia to reflect and by reminding them the people who ran away from the Serbian ethnic cleansing, I also invite them to not allow those events to be repeated”, Berisha underlined.

Dick Marty’s report

Prime Minister Sali Berisha considered Dick Marty’s report and his accusations for crime against humanity as unfounded. The head of the Albanian government equalized his report to that of Vladimir Vukcevic, the Serbian war crimes Prosecutor.

“Tadic has considered Marty’s declarations for war crimes in the Albanian territory as true. Dick Marty’s report is a copy of Vukcevic’s report. Many of these accusations are unfounded and biased. The Dick Marty-Vukcevic report quotes Carla Del Ponte’s pretenses, who used the same unfounded sources as Dick Marty. The goal of this report is to draw attention from the Verdict of the International Court of Justice, which considered Kosovo’s independence as legal. My government sent an invitation to EULEX for investigating, and we are open to cooperate. What is written on the report is defamation. What I read from the report of Carla Del Ponte reminded me of Agatha Christie”, Berisha underlined.

Albania’s position for the new Palestinian state

Prime Minister Berisha expressed Albania’s position for the creation of the Palestinian state.

“My country supports the idea of an independent Palestine, but unilateral positions cannot be successful. I support the decision of the quartet, which made clear to Palestine what was the right way for resolving the Independence issue”, Berisha declared.
