Berisha ignores Wikileaks cables

Prime Minister Sali Berisha tried to reduce the public effect of the
Tirana US Embassy cables published by Wikileaks. Berisha leveled the
information that the former US Ambassador, John Withers sent to the US
State Department, with the Albanian daily press.

Berisha gave this comment when asked by the journalists during a joint press conference with the Honduras President, showing that he wasn’t concerned by the cables that define him as a Prime Minister that tries to take under control independent institutions, that mention his family members as involved in the “Gerdec” tragedy or that give information about the suspicions for corruptive and criminal affairs from his cabinet members. The stance of the Prime Minister was:

“First of all, my advice is to read them even more. Secondly, I found there a reflection of the Albanian daily press, accusations and counteraccusations that the political forces address to each other. All I can say is to read them even more, because those cables are a reflection of the Albanian daily press. Not completely, but almost”, Berisha declared.

But in Berisha’s response there was a comment that had serious tone, the one regarding the US relations and his consideration for the US Ambassador Arvizu, insinuating that he was not like his predecessor, John Withers.

“I guarantee you that the relations with the USA are excellent. My consideration for ambassador Arvizu is steadfast. This friend country has expressed his stance very clearly: they support Albania and not given political forces”, Berisha added.

Before Berisha, the Albanian President, Bamir Topi was also asked about the Wikileaks cables. But Topi avoided this comment, declaring that the question was out of place, due to the presence of the President of Honduras. Mr. Topi declared that he would give his comments in the days to come.
