Ambassadors, result must be announced

Western diplomats continue to be active and trying to unblock the
post-election situation and to solve the political stalemate that is
freezing the result certification for Tirana’s Mayor. (UPDATE)

While the political tension on election’s result is heating up, The Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania Ambassador Eugen Wollfarth, the Ambassador of the United States of America Alexander Arvizu, and the Head of the European Union Delegation Ambassador Ettore Sequi have met the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, and the opposition leader Edi Rama, pressuring them for solving the situation and showing self-restraint.

Right before the meetings, OSCE office published a joint statement of the three ambassadors, saying that the Albanian citizens want and deserve clarity regarding the election outcome and that it is essential that the provisional official results be tabulated accurately by the Central Election Commission and announced expeditiously.

In addition, the statement says, it is highly important that the procedures for resolving competing claims be spelled out clearly and that they be fully consistent with Albanian legal provisions, including the Electoral Code. Sending a clear message to both political parties, the declaration underlines that both sides should exercise self-restraint and fully respect democratic process.

In the afternoon, both ambassadors visited the Albanian Prime Minister Berisha. According to a Council of Ministers press release, the ambassadors valued the calm voting process and the declarations of the Prime Minister after the voting process had ended in Tirana, which said that in such conditions of a razor-thin result, all parts should be patient until the final and legally certified result will be announced.

On his behalf, the Albania Prime Minsiter Sali Berisha declared that the majority and he will remain certain that any vote cast by the Albanians will be accurately counted and the final result will reflect the people’s will.

After the Prime Minister, the three ambassadors visited the Socialist Party headquarters where they met the opposition leader, Edi Rama.
