The publication of a video showing Ilir Meta (then leading SMI, on the ruling coalition), was used by the opposition led by Edi Rama to accuse the government of corruption.

On January 21st, 2011, the Socialist Party and the other members of the opposition organized a large protest in front of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Four political murders took place in this protest, the most documented in the history of Albania.

But none of these were enough for Judges to bring the authors to justice.

The manifestation started very peacefully, and when most of the supporters had left, the National Guard used live bullets against a smaller crowd that was clashing with the police at the gates of the Prime Minister’s Office.

One of the journalists covering the protest, Fatos Mahmutaj, was standing on a platform, together with the journalists of Top Channel, when he was shot and wounded on one hand.

Right by his side was one of the victims, Hekuran Deda, who took a bullet in his head and died on the spot.

The second person, Ziver Veizi, died while standing in front of the Prime Minister’s Office.

Faik Myrtaj was the third victim. He took a handgun bullet to his chest, for which the National Guard commander, Ndrea Prendi, was taken under investigation.

The fourth person who died was Aleks Nika. He was shot while standing far from the gates of the Prime Minister’s Office. No one was blamed for his murder, because the bullet was destroyed and couldn’t be identified.

Nine years after the protest, justice hasn’t been done yet.
