60% of forests were destroyed

Albania has lost 60% of its forests, a concern that is raised today by Selman Meziu.

“60% of forests in Lura, Theth, Martanesh and even in southern Albania have been destroyed”, says Meziu, adding that this conclusion is based on official statistics, private sources and talks with engineers.

Meziu says that a serious law for forests would resolve this situation. Politics, according to Meziu, is the main problem since they don’t allow professionals to administer forests.

“We need a serious law in cooperation with international partners, because we still don’t know who manages our forests”, he said.

Mziu adds that Albania once counted 1.5 million hectares of forests, and now has only 500.000.
